The Beginning

The birth of the Congo Hope School is linked with the history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the central government dedicates 0% of its governmental expenditure on education. As result of a 6-year civil war, 5.2 million children in the country receive no education. Education is not compulsory of universal. The community in the Democratic Republic of the Congo lacks the upward mobility and chance to overcome poverty that is inherent with other countries. In other words, it is in great need of a school and in great need of education. Congo Hope School was thus established as a non-profit organization that provides education to orphans that would otherwise not receive education.

The Foundation

Established in 2006, the Congo Hope School (L’Ecole D’Espoir) now encompasses more than 550 orphans from ages 6-18. With help from organizations such as the American School of Kinshasa (TASOK), various embassies, and the United Nations, Hope School makes education accessible to numerous orphans who lacked such opportunities beforehand. Not only does the school pay for students’ tuitions, but it also provides students with meals and supplies so that they can fully concentrate on attending school. The school also focuses on arranging trips for students to local businesses, embassies, UN in order to demonstrate the bright future they can obtain. Under the motto “what we can dream, we can achieve,” the Congo Hope School Foundation has been teaching its students to keep their hopes alive regardless of various hardships placed in their lives.
